Shooting Sports Campout

This November, Troop 581 traveled to Gore, VA to BSA’s Camp Rock Enon. Tucked in the Shenandoah Mountains, Camp Rock Enon has been in operation since 1944. The camp is rustic but has great facilities and is a favorite of the troop to visit. Our adult leaders stayed in cabins heated by wood burning stoves and the boys slept in tents. Between the shooting program and the temperature that got into the 20’s, safety was the theme of the weekend.

The boys in the troop wanted to have a campout focused on shooting sports so the Patrol Leader’s Council and the troop’s shooting instructors planned this trip for almost 9 months. More planning goes into this kind of program because of the need to schedule ranges, get the properly trained instructors and ensure that all safety precautions are in place. When it all came together, Scouts had the opportunity to shoot bows and arrows, 22lr rifles and shotguns at the skeet range.

Many thanks go to Dave Atwell and Carl Lepard for spearheading this event, as well as all the other certified range instructors and safety officers including Jen Houchin, Rob Lesefka, John Phillips, Jim Chaplain and Rob Lunceford without whom this campout could not have happened.
