The summer of 2019 provided lots of opportunities for adventure for Troop 581 and one of the most exciting was the opportunity to attend the Sea Base Bahamas Adventure. Sea Base is one of BSA’s four national high adventure bases that provides unique scouting experiences for older Scouts in multiple locations to include the Bahamas as well as Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Twelve Scouts and five adult leaders formed two sailing crews and flew to the Caribbean to participate in the Bahamas Sailing Adventure. No passengers here. Scouts and leaders alike learned the ins and outs of sailing and spent a week in July honing their skills while navigating the waters of the Bahamian Islands.

After flying into Marsh Harbor, Bahamas, the crews cleared customs and soon met the Captains and First Mates of their boats. After stowing their gear, they quickly learned about life on a sailboat. The received instruction on everything from how to work the sails to navigation to general seamanship. Each day they would sail to a new harbor or quay to explore. Days were spent sailing, snorkeling, and exploring the small towns and villages around the Great Abaco Island.

A great thanks goes out to the Captains and First Mates that took our Scouts on this adventure and to Troop 581’s own High Adventure Coordinator Pete Stark for setting this all up. It was an adventure that that will not be soon forgotten!
